THE
KARKONOSZE MOUNTAINS – THE
LEGENDARY LAND
An
exceptionally unique place. The Karkonosze Mountains and Jeleniogórska Valley
are vibrant with a thousand years of history of three nations and a multitude of
cultures. This land is wrapped in a host of legends and mysteries: Bolesław III
Wrymouth, the founder of Jelenia Góra; the cruel Kunegunda who ruled the Chojnik
Castle; and the mysterious figure of Karkonosz (Mountain Spirit), the master of
the Karkonosze Mountains, by some experts regarded as the legendary Gandalf (the
white magician from the Lord of Rings story). On top of all that, one can find
mysterious signs left all over the land by the Walons, treasure hunters, and
mysteries of the herbalists who searched for the panacea for eternal youth. Fine
springs, living water, colourful lakes. The obscure and the weird can be found
everywhere. The Karkonosze Mountains are a land of legends.

a few words about the national park
The Karkonoski National Park covers almost the entire Karkonosze Mountains on the Polish and the Czech side of the mountains. The area of the park on the Polish side is 5575 hectares, of which forests cover two thirds of the entire area. The Sub-alpine and Alpine vegetation levels, covering an area of 1717 hectares (that is, the area situated above the upper border of the forests), were covered with strict protection. The Karkonoski National Park is situated in six districts (gminas): Szklarska Poręba, Piechowice, Jelenia Góra, Podgórzyn, Karpacz, and Kowary. KNP covers the Main Ridge of the Karkonosze Mountains from the western slopes of Mumlawski Wierch in the west far to Przełęcz Okraj in the east. The Park also includes two enclaves in the Karkonoskie Foothills: Mount Chojnik and the Szklarki Waterfall. The two enclaves contain well-preserved natural submontane and montane mixed forests (predominantly beech).
HEALTH AND BEAUTY
The curative waters of the Jeleniogórska Valley have been well known for centuries. The fame of warm water springs in Cieplice spread all over Europe as early as in the middle ages. The wide range of the offer of the health resort, wellness center, and spa attract thousands of visitors even from remotest parts of Europe and North America.
